5 Goal Oriented Qualities To Succeed Today
We all aspire to be goal oriented. But what kind of techniques do the successful people have that enables them to accomplish their goals?
Why Are Goals The One Thing You Should Aim To Improve?
Now let me start by saying that when it comes to me setting goals - I’m still a work in progress. I set goals for myself - some of them I hit and others I don’t.
Most recently, I set a goal for myself to hit the gym and bulk up by 10kg before my wedding. I mean who doesn’t want to look good in a suit right?
Before anyone says congrats, that’s not me. But with my big dreams, I thought I could look even 1/3 of that.
Anyway, what happened to my goal? Instead of gaining, I actually lost 2kg instead!
Now, of course, life happens, things get in the way, work becomes unsurprisingly more, and these can always derail us from time to time. But through it all, the most important thing is to continuously learn how to get better at goal-setting.
Because in every task that you embark upon, whether it may be professional or personal - your planning and your consistency in execution will determine your success or failure.
For today, let’s break down what makes a successful goal-oriented person and how we can transform ourselves to succeed.
Qualities Of A Goal-Oriented Person
Quality 1: Planners (they take time to plan)
A goal-oriented person plans each step to reach their desired outcome.
They prioritize tasks in a logical order and plan ahead to gather the resources needed to accomplish them.
When planning, always plan each task with a specific time allocated. Time & deadlines drive urgency. Urgency creates a need for tasks to be done despite everything else that you may have going on.
Quality 2: Positive (they look for solutions, not excuses)
A goal-oriented person focuses on possibilities. They avoid negative words like, “I can’t”, and “that’s impossible”. Instead, they transform them into “how”.
Instead of saying “I can’t get a remote job because nobody I know is working one”, they would say “How can I get in contact with people who are working remote jobs?”
Instead of making a negative statement that hinders you, they turn that statement into a question. And now, they have to find an answer to that question. And when they find that answer, now they can execute to progress to the next level of their goal.
Quality 3: Decisive (they make decisions leading them to their goals)
Goal-oriented people are decisive. Start by asking yourself; what are actions needed to help you meet your goals?
A successful individual makes well-informed, time-sensitive decisions.
They first seek accurate information, then, they make sure they have a good understanding of that information before they make the final decision.
Decisiveness is crucial in the effective execution of plans and achieving a goal.
On the other hand, don’t worry if you second-guess yourself or have to change your trajectory midway. It happens because if there was a perfect way, everyone would be a millionaire by now.
You also need to balance information gathering, the cost of deliberation, and delaying a decision versus the costs of making a bad decision.
Quality 4: Self Aware (they are honest with their strengths & weaknesses)
Self-awareness is one of the best traits of any goal-oriented person. Heck, even anybody. All of us need to be self-aware and honest with ourselves.
So what does being goal-oriented have to do with self-awareness? Self-awareness is key to leading with authenticity, trust, openness, and purpose.
If you have a deep understanding of who you are, you’ll be able to understand how others can complement your shortcomings.
Self-awareness lets you answer these questions:
What are you trying to achieve?
Is there something that are you doing that’s working?
List some of the things that you do that slow you down.
What do you need to change?
Quality 5: Organized (they are organized for hyper-productivity)
Becoming organized increases your productivity.
It will also help you focus your energy on the most important tasks. It also improves the flow of communication in the workplace, especially with your team.
As you already know, better communication yields better results.
In the same way, organizing reduces stress levels, helps you meet deadlines, and develops consistency with being on time.
Organized people are not born, instead, they are formed from developing healthy habits.
